pre-spring fever

February 1, 2012

Iqaluit looks different at -14ishC. More people out walking, someone pushing someone in a wheelchair, someone pulling a child on a sled… I sweated in snowpants, left my hood down off my toque, and got to work without frozen tears. In the daylight I played my favourite game, “spot the carver,” as grinders’ electric buzz ricocheted between buildings. Walking after work, “spot the skidoo” was a tense necessity, as the warmer weather brought joyriders out speeding around corners and between buildings in the dark. And the ravens zoom by, sleek and purposeful in cartwheeling mobs of 20-30, ignoring the rest of us species, after days? weeks? spent sitting alone or in pairs,  in their messily ruffled survival clothes.
